Shirodhara and Kati Basti

OVERVIEW

About this course

This short, practical, hands-on training course covers two Allied Ayurvedic Bodywork Treatments. These treatments are part of the HLTAYV003 Provide Ayurvedic bodywork therapies unit of competency from both the Diploma of Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultation HLT52615 and the Advanced Diploma in Ayurveda HLT62615.

Shirodhara and Kati Basti are suitable Ayurvedic treatment procedures for current Ayurvedic or Yoga practitioners, alternative and holistic medicine professionals, masseurs, bodywork therapists, and advanced Ayurveda students.

This resource is not AI-generated. Quality is paramount. We deliver real, clear, concise, and practical information and training that is easy for students to follow and meets compliance requirements.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a classical Ayurvedic therapy that involves gently pouring a continuous stream of warm, medicated oil, herbal decoctions, or other liquids (such as milk, buttermilk, or coconut water) onto the forehead to induce relaxation and balance the mind and body. Shirodhara is Ayurveda’s approach to stress relief.

The term "shirodhara" comes from the Sanskrit words "shiro" (meaning head) and "dhara" (meaning flow or stream).

Shirodhara induces deep relaxation, helps reduce stress and anxiety, improves sleep quality, and calms the nervous system. It also nourishes the sense organs, strengthens the hair, and improves facial skin and glow.

Kati Basti

Kati Basti is an intensely soothing, deep tissue treatment therapy where a generous quantity of warm, herbal medicated oil is retained on your lower back to relieve pain, stiffness, and inflammation. The benefits of Kati Basti come from the combination of heat to heal (increasing blood flow and reducing swelling) and herbal oils to repair tissue.

In Sanskrit, 'Kati' means the lower back, and 'Basti' means retaining something inside.

Kati Basti is an Ayurvedic oil pooling therapy for acute lower back pain and musculoskeletal issues. It helps in regulating Vata dosha (the movement of wind in the body), strengthening and nourishing nerves and muscles.
